Food inflation rose to 17.05 percent in the week ended Jan. 22, increased the second consecutive week, at the expense of more expensive fruits vegetables and milk.

Food inflation rose to 1.48 percentage point to 15.57 percent the previous week. Consumer price inflation last year was 20.56 percent.

On an annual basis, prices of onions increased by 130.41 percent in the third week of January, although they have declined considerably in recent days.

Vegetables as a whole has become more expensive with 77.05 per cent per year of potato increased by 6.22 percent.

Fruit and milk became expensive by 15.47 percent and 11.41 percent in one year on an annual basis, respectively, data released by the government showed.

non-food inflation rose to 0.66 percent the week after oil marketing companies raised the price of petrol around Rs. 2.50 liters.

"Fuel and electricity" category showed an increase of 11.61 years per cent over the year.
