The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s plan to ban use of all levels of micron plastic carry bags from July 1 in the city is in limbo.

The authorities are decided to ban the manufacture, sale and use of below-40 micron plastic carry bags.July1 will deadline for enforcement of the ban. Andhra Pradesh High Court passed the order on Monday to ban the plastic.

Proddutur and other areas write petitions on this so the court gave interim directions to municipal authorities not to interfere with the sale and use of above-20 microns plastic carry bags.

A senior official said: “After the High Court’s interim orders, it is now clear that the GHMC will not stand a chance in court if plastic manufacturers seek legal re-dress,”

Another reason for GHMC’s capitulation: It has been under great pressure from managements of malls, shopping complexes, commercial establishments and retailers’ association of India for a breathing space of at least six months to allow them to exhaust their stock.

Retailers’ Association of India regional director (South), Mr D. Joice Smiling, said the ban should not be enforced until other carry bags flood the market.

Meanwhile, the AP Plastics’ Manufacturers’ Association in coordination with Kattedan Small Scale Manufacturers’ Association is organizing a rally on Wednesday to protest against the proposed ban on all plastic carry bags and cups.
